Dunmoe Castle is located in a peaceful setting with a breathtaking view of the Boyne River. It used to be the English Pale’s limit. The D’arcy family lived at the Castle, which was erected in the 15th century. The Castle, which formerly had four turrets, has now been reduced to only two due to years of decay.
At the Cromwellian invasion in 1649, passing troops on their route from Drogheda to Athboy shot on the Castle from the South Bank, but it escaped serious damage, even during the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. It remained intact until the 1798 revolt when it was destroyed by fire, and now tourists may view what remains of the four-story fortress. It is about halfway between Navan and Slane.
A tiny unkempt church and graveyard near the castle contains a crypt holding members of the D’Arcy family.
